Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data that help to establish more continuos and
effective management systems of chronic mentally ill patients.
The author classified psychiatric nurses into community psychiatric nurses and hospital psychiatric nurses, and investigated the relationship between awareness of community mental health and connection psychiatric patients with other management resources in both groups.
The duration of this study was from February 20, 2000 to March 30, 2000, The subjects were total 590 psychiatric nurses, 169 subjects who worked in community and 421 worked in hospital.
The awareness of community mental health was measured by CMHI(Community Mental Health Ideology) Scale that was developed by Baker and Schubert in 1967, and modified by author. The results were as follows:

1. The community mental health nurses had more experience for community mental health education, and possessed more licences as mental health nurse, and had more experience that they connected psychiatric patients with management resources than hospital psychiatric nurses.
2. The awareness of community mental health was highest in their 20¢¥s and lowest in 40¢¥s, showing difference according to age : by education level, highest in graduate school level and lowest in junior college, showing higher awareness with higher education. Also, There were significant difference between groups in degrees of need for local community mental health projects and connection patients with other management resources. However, there were no significant difference in experience that they connected psychiatric patients with other management resources between two groups.
3. The average score on awareness of
community mental health was 3.520.25 out of total score 4 points among the all subjects. It was higher in community nurses than hospital nurses. In addition to that, according to each study item, the score was highest in item of basic management of community and lowest in item of social management in the both subject groups.

4. The degree of necessity of community mental health practice and connection psychiatric patients with management resources is higher in the subjects with high score on awareness of community mental health than in the subjects with low score. However, the experience of connecting the patients with management resources is not significantly different between two groups.
Seen from these results, for the successful achievement of community mental health projects, they are urgently needed that systematization of connection psychiatric patients with community mental health resources for psychiatric patients management: more publicity and information on community resources are needed: efforts by professionals in the field of mental health and much publicity are needed to help to eliminate prejudice against psychiatric patients: and training of young, inexperienced hospital nurses on community mental health education to raise their level of awareness and mental health professionals who can continue to raise awareness of community mental health.
